News Title: Numerous new home communities are expected to be impacted by the proposed improvements to Highway 31, which would extend the roadway from SC into NC - public meetings being held the end of September
SC Highway 31, also known as the Carolina Bays Parkway, is a major thoroughfare in the Myrtle Beach area, offering quick and convenient access across the Grand Strand without the congestion of U.S. 17. Because it avoids the heavy traffic of U.S. 17 along the Grand Strand, Highway 31 is one of the most important roadways for both locals and visitors, making travel around Myrtle Beach and nearby communities much more efficient.

Highway 31 runs parallel to U.S. Highway 17, providing a faster, less congested north–south route through Horry County. The highway stretches from near Little River in the north down toward Socastee in the south, with multiple interchanges that connect to Highways 9, 22, 501, and 544.

A recent phase of Highway 31 was officially completed and opened to traffic on November 7, 2019. This extended Highway 31 from SC 544 down to SC 707, creating a six-lane, limited-access thoroughfare that greatly improves regional traffic flow.

One of the final Horry County RIDE 3 projects is the final phase of Highway 31 and would extend Carolina Bays Parkway from its current location at SC Highway 9 in Horry County to the North Carolina state line.

The broader Highway 31 project would extend Carolina Bays Parkway across the North Carolina state line to U.S. 17 in Brunswick County, North Carolina, near Shallotte.

Due to the nature of the project being worked across multiple states, the project is a collaboration between the S.C. Department of Transportation (SCDOT) and N.C. Department of Transportation (NCDOT)

There are two Open-House public meetings being held at the end of September on the project and offer residents and stakeholders an opportunity to review plans, ask questions, and share feedback on the project’s potential effects.

As can be seen in the accompanying graphic, the proposed improvements of an enhance multi-lane full access freeway will have impacts to several current and planned subdivisions in the surrounding areas of Myrtle Beach.
